Winter Weather Almost Halts U.S. Auto Sales

eCZ / February 10, 2016 /Finance

In view of the low gasoline prices, sustainable credit systems and a figuratively moderate economic growth, auto sales in the U.S. this year has turned into a mixed bag of inclinations and declinations.

Moreover, heavy snow along the East Coast also has a lot to do with the impact caused in the overall sales of automobiles. Autodata Corp even reported a reverberation of 0.3 percent deduction in the 1.15 million vehicles that were made available for sale. The year 2016 certainly started with balanced annual sales of 17.58 million, but if this is compared to the last year’s start, a fall of 0.4 percent is discovered.

Automobile companies like Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Ford Motor Co., also reported weaker sales, with the former posting a single – digit percentage gain within a time span of 12 months while the latter showcased a result of the same standard with an approximately 2.6 percent fall.

Auto companies continue to share the pressure of increasing deprecation with even the U.S.’s top – seller, General Motors Co, reporting a little increase of 0.5 percent sale.

What was discovered this year is how customers continued a set nature of favoring pricier vehicles, despite the several perks offered to them by others. Kelley Blue Book, the pricing data provider, revealed a rise in the estimated transaction price for new vehicles of more than 2%.

Last year in September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found many Volkswagen vehicles to consist of software known as the “defeat device” which helped change the performance while being tested. Given this particular diesel emission scandal, they ended up facing a substantial reduction in their sales, as well. They faced an overall drop of 15% in the same month with a total sale of 20,079 vehicles only. Seeing this, the company decided to halt the sales of most diesel – powered vehicles. The recall status of these lines of vehicles still remains pending.

Both, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks reported an increase of 7% in total in the whole year. The latter even reported their sales edging up to 1% to 203,745 vehicles.

However, John Humphrey, the senior vice president of the global automotive practice at researcher J.D. Power and Associates, expects a positive response in the future.

"Despite the storm, we're still seeing a strong month," he said. He believes that the loss incurred in January will easily be recovered in February.

"We expect 2016 to be another record year, but all eyes will be tracking the expected slower growth rate as the year progresses," said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at researcher LMC Automotive. "All brands will not be able to grow as they have over the past few years, creating a higher level of competitive intensity and pressure on each brand,” he further added.

Detroit Three Auto Sales Soar

eCZ / January 29, 2016 /Business

2015 was definitely a great year for the auto industry, and you can tell by the record number of sales made. More cars and trucks were sold in the United States than any other year in history! Available credit, low interest rate, and low gas prices all played an important role in helping three popular automakers exceed sales numbers in 2015. The three top Detroit automakers include Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors.

Great time for the automobile business

Tom Libby, analyst for IHS Automotive said it is a really good time for the automobile business, especially when you look at 2009 and 2010, when business wasn't so great due to the recession. The famous Detroit Three are doing even better than they were in 2000, pre-recession. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles sold more vehicles in 2015 than in any year since 2005, Ford had their best year since 2006, and GM had a 5 percent increase in vehicles sold since 2014. In the darkest of days, GM was on the verge of closing several of their plants in the U.S. and Canada. Fortunately the industry has been able to bounce back as the economy continues to improve. IHS Automotive said that in 2015, the average new car transaction price was $33,188. This number is up nearly 20 percent since 2005. Combine this average new car pricing with more consumers buying and you can see why the Detroit Three are doing so well.

Will 2016 bring in even better numbers?

2015 was a great year for the automobile business, so will they be just as successful in 2016? Auto executives do not seemed to be worried in the slightest and believe that they will sell even more cars in 2016, to set a new industry record. GM Chief Economist, Mustafa Mohatarem, made a statement that the auto company is expected to see their second consecutive year of record industry sales. Ford Chief Economist, Emily Kolinski Morris, believes that continued success is in large part due to a strong housing market, low mortgage rates, and falling unemployment rates. Even Kelley Blue Book analysts believe that in 2016, there will be a total of 17.5 to 18 million new cars and trucks sold in the U.S.

Fuel economy and midsize crossovers for the win

With the boom in car sales in 2015, it is important to look at what type of cars are selling the best. Passenger car sales slowed down, but fuel economy cars and midsize crossover sales were on the rise. Midsize SUV sales rose 12 percent for the year, and this trend is expected to continue in 2016. Americans are looking for a family vehicle, that is not necessarily the typical minivan, (not that there is anything wrong with minivans). Top sellers include the Ford Escape, Toyota Rav4, Honda Pilot, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The auto industry should also expect to see increased sales of newer used vehicles with low mileage for the 2016 year.

The auto industry looks a lot different today than it did during the recession. We can't wait to see how The Detroit Three, and the auto industry as a whole, does in regards to auto sales in 2016!

Are Hydrogen Cars On The Way?

eCZ / January 20, 2016 /Hydrogen Cars

For all the talk we’ve heard about reducing our dependence on oil, be it for political or environmental reasons, the modest push toward hybrids and the few exceedingly expensive electric cars available today haven’t gotten us much closer to a an oil-free society of drivers. Audi and Lexus are looking to change that.

The two luxury brands each unveiled a hydrogen fuel cell concept model at the North American International Auto Show to both acclaim and scepticism. Here’s how the cars break down.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen fuel cells work by converting hydrogen gas into electricity. They’re a ready solution for both reducing dependence on foreign oil, as hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, and their only byproduct is water vapor rather than the carbon dioxide put out by burning petroleum in today’s cars. This technology has long been talked about, but is just starting to see its first applications on the commercial automotive market, with Toyota’s Mirai offered in small numbers in Japan and California. Even then, limited refueling stations limit current cars’ range.

The Cars

Audi’s concept is an SUV that the brand is calling the h-tron, powered by two electric motors, one each for the front and rear axles, with a hydrogen tank in the back of the car where the engine would normally sit. The car is currently logging around 370 miles (595 km) per tank of fuel and max speeds of 124 mph. Both in form and in function, it’s true to the Audi tradition - a light and quick piece of machinery that uses a lithium ion battery pack to deliver short bursts of up to 134 additional horsepower above the hydrogen cell’s standard 148. The interior features Audi’s virtual cockpit, curved OLED screens, and LTE connectivity. Right now Audi isn’t talking openly about consumer production for the current concept, but with the e-tron before it and long line of research supporting hydrogen cell technology backing it, it’s assumed that Audi will bring the h-tron or something similar to market by the year 2020.

Toyota also took their luxury brand the environmental route by showing a hydrogen-powered Lexus to a North American audience. First unveiled in Tokyo in October of 2015, Toyota hopes to have hydrogen powered Lexus available to the public by 2020, as well. The LF-FC, as the concept is currently called, is powered by two in-wheel electric motors up front, and a larger electric drive motor to the rear, giving the car four-wheel drive. This is a stark departure from what is currently featured in the Mirai. The car is striking piece with a grille that looks like it was pulled right off a futuristic muscle car, but so far has mostly been viewed as a showpiece to set the tone for what Lexus will produce in the future, rather than an early model of a vehicle headed for production.

So are hydrogen powered cars on the way? It looks like it, and there’s something to be said for having established automakers turning to the technology. It’s going to take some time to see eventual specs and price points for these models, but be on the lookout, because they’re on their way.

Auto Industry Expects Bumper Year in 2016

eCZ / January 15, 2016 /Business

If you think 2015’s 17.5 million vehicle mark is where the growth of the domestic auto industry reaches its epic peak of being the healthiest one in the history of the auto industry, think again. Experts on the basis of several economic signs predict that 2016 is going to be even better than its previous years.

Given the ever-increasing labor market that delivers improved excellence with each passing day as well as lower than before interest rates is leading the United States’ demand for auto vehicles to go skyrocketing. Adding to this, are the dropping gasoline rates, which primarily decreases the average post-purchase costs to be incurred of a given vehicle.

Moreover, the conveniences at which car title loans online are provided to ease the burden of any manner of financial trouble these days, buyers are bound to enjoy their liberty to the fullest. All this and more has led to the controversial question of whether the auto industry may be looking at a bumper year in 2016.

But, the status of interest rates still remains under slight speculation with concerns about how the Federal Reserve’s future decisions will affect the same. Although, lending terms will remain customer-friendly, there are a few consequences that can be foreseen as a result of industry profits, says Mark Wakefield, head of the automotive practice at consultants AlixPartners LLP.

He estimates if new-car loan rates eventually increase to 4% from 3%, consumers would spend roughly $1,000 less at the dealership. He further states that decreasing gasoline prices is diverting the buyers’ spending habits onto bigger ticket items such as more expensive cars, real estate properties and so on.

There are, however, certain risks involved in this market, as well. Chief among them is the short supply of used cars leading to a rise in their prices to such an extent that they are almost double the rate as compared to newer cars. Even though, their supply is expected to increase – uncertainty with regards to the sale of new cars in such a situation still prevails.

‘There’s definitely a threat to new car sales from used car values going down,” said Tom Kontos, chief economist. “People do need to consider the softening of used-car values as a factor that may dampen new-car sales in 2016 from what they otherwise might have been,” he added.

The potential decline in the prices of used cars in the near future will influence the buyer's’ decision of purchasing a new car in the present. Moreover, with the rising average terms of new-vehicle loans, customers are bound to be a state of confusion.

On the other hand, the European market also seems to be walking the United States’ footsteps. While Russia and Brazil still haven’t recovered from the collapse that had taken place in the recent years. Major parts of Asia such as China and India are expected to continue expanding, although; there is a certain amount of uncertainty involved in their markets, as well.

Top Talents Abandon Automotive Industry, Adopt Innovators in the Car Market

eCZ / January 12, 2016 /Industry

There comes a time in every sector when the top talents begin to migrate from their own sectors to others due to the lack of prospective future in the field where they have worked for years. This results in a brain drain, hampering the respective sector greatly. However, in the automotive sector, the problem is an intricate one. The top talents are not only abandoning the automotive industry, but migrating to other innovators in the car market such as makers of electric cars and self-driving vehicles.

This is a recent trend and it has picked up even more with the traditional automakers going over to join the avant-garde automotive sector that deals with the new cutting edge and innovative technologies.

The old days of machine assembly line are gone now. Today the need is for people who can build, maintain, and work with highly sophisticated technologies to design as well as deliver excellent products. There is a huge demand of skilled workers, and it will continue to increase in the future ahead.

However, there are some areas of focus where these companies need to work upon and come up with a talent strategy that will help prevent the migration of talented employees.

Self-awareness

The first step is to increase self-awareness among workers. Companies that do not take this into the equation are at greater risk to be exposed to the possibility of brain drain. Once the companies wake up to the realization that their talent pool has migrated, the gutting will be over. To prevent this, the companies must review and make steps to retain their top talents. Retention is far more useful than regretting over the thinning talent pool.

Competitive position

The next to ponder over is the competition from other companies. The companies need to examine other’s talent pool, see into their resources to glean an idea as to what is keeping the top talents there and implement the same to retain their own. The gaps and gluts in their rival companies should also be taken into account.

Money cannot solve the problem of employee migration from one company to another, though it is a vital option as the Silicon Valley has proven over a couple of years.

Outsource your non-core business to focus on your core business

In the non-strategic areas, outsourcing is another option – which means shifting your headache to someone else. But it is noteworthy here that outsourcing cannot work as a silver bullet for your core business. This is because recruiting new talents can solve some of the problem. But it cannot put a stop to all your problems.

The only way to prevent the migration of highly trained or qualified people from your company to others is to adopt the policy of Silicon Valley. The automakers and suppliers need to tap deeper into their employees to find a way to connect with their innate desire to work on something, which is far greater than they are. This way, the employees’ self-esteem, their value will increase, and they will realize their position is crucial towards making the world a better place.

Conclusion

As long as competitive market trends, companies with better prospects stay, the talent pool will continue to migrate. Innovation and rise in industrial skills mean individuals will go to those companies, which match their standards, and can provide them with enough reasons to stay. Companies should revise their policies, implement new strategies and provide better prospects to retain their talent pool.

New Ford GT 2017

eCZ / January 4, 2015 /Ford

The Ford GT is all the rage as it's the newest addition to the lineup coming to consumers during the 107 car season. At the North American International Auto Show, the Ford GT was the talk of the show with its sleek new look as Ford's newest foray into the supercar with a 600 plus horsepower engine. To aid with the advertising of the car they have a limited edition build it yourself Ford GT Kit. The kit comes with fourteen different pieces and the auto show stamp to show that it is the special edition one. The entire kit will be released as a retail model sometime in April and that will contain 28 piece. This kit will cost $14.99.

Ford partnered up with Revell to build the kits. This is a tradition that the company has done for some time now as they first started doing this with the Raptors and Mustangs. This type of excitement is prevalent because this car is something special

The New Model

Ford's Chief Engineer Jamal Hameedi has said that his car is state of the arch as it has the best power to weight ratio. He didn't say that this was just for Fords in general but any single car on the market. The weight has yet to be revealed on the car but with it being more than 600 horsepower it should be expected to be quite light. The GT goes into production in late 2015 with an expected arrival date of sometime in 2016. The car utilizes a new type of body as it has carbon fiber monocoque passenger cell. This is in addition to its new front and rear subframes that come equipped with aluminum and carbon fiber panels.

The car also has a deployable rear spoiler. The spoiler was designed for its high end aerodynamics which it will utilize for speed. The deployable spoiler was designed in a wind tunnel and is at the core of the new GT's design. It will help reduce drag and aid in in downforce along with optimizing stability. One of their top engineers stated that:

“Although each surface on the GT is functionally crafted to manage airflow, it also features fully active aerodynamic components to improve braking, handling and stability. An active rear spoiler is keyed to both speed and driver input, reactively deploying and adjusting its height and/or pitch angle depending on conditions.”

Everything about this new design has been built for efficient speed. From the spoilers and curved windshield. This type of design is part of what Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak says is "an innovation laboratory, creating unique cars and parts for customers.” Their team is going to be going to racetracks all around the world and working on incorporating new design in making cars more aerodynamic and applying lightweight materials while providing efficient technologies to new cars.

The consumer version of the Ford's GT will be competing against rivals like Porsche, Chevrolet and BMW. Not only those companies, but the company will also be competing against Lamborghini's Huracan and entry level Ferrari's. The new Ford GT is something and will be carrying an MSRP price between anywhere of $200,000-$250,000.

The Latest and Greatest Car Safety Features

eCZ / December 16, 2015 /Car Safety

When you’re driving in your car, you deserve to be safe. While consumers often care more about comfort and entertainment during their ride, safety really is and should always be the priority. Fortunately, most modern vehicles incorporate safety features into even their most basic design. However, when possible, it’s often worth it to go above and beyond where your safety and the safety of those you love is concerned and to opt for additional safety features when they’re available. Below, we’ve detailed some relatively new, or at least updated, safety features that you can and should opt for whenever possible!

Safety Feature #1: Full Coverage Airbags

It’s no secret that most modern vehicles come with front airbags. In fact, that’s been practically an industry standard for more than a decade. However, for complete safety, it’s always better to opt for full coverage airbags, which includes side curtain front and rear airbags, as well as seat-mounted side airbags.

And, to really take safety to the next level, consider extras like inflatable seat belts, front center airbags, and pedestrian airbags, which work to cover and protect anyone you might accidentally hit while driving!

Safety Feature #2: Backup Cameras

Another must-have safety feature for modern drivers is the backup camera. These cameras give the drivers a clear and thorough view of what’s behind them, allowing them to see pedestrians, pets, other vehicles, and more before backing up. This can prevent lots of accidents, injuries, and damage. Plus, it makes parking, especially that pesky parallel parking, a whole lot easier!

Safety Feature #3: Tire Pressure Monitoring

This safety feature doesn’t get a lot of attention because most people (wrongly!) think that their tire pressure isn’t all that important when it comes to their safety. These people, however, should know that poor tire pressure can lead to flats, blow-outs, unexpected slow speeds, and other potential hazards. As such, it’s wise to have a sensor that alerts you when one of your tires is getting low. And, for even more safety, find out if your vehicle can be equipped with run-flat tires, which will continue to work, even after a problem, for several miles, until you can get to a safe place.

Safety Feature #4: Anti-Lock Braking System

Finally, you always want to try and get vehicles that come equipped with anti-lock braking systems. With this safety feature, you’ll be able to have brakes that work for you, no matter what happens, even if the brake pedal accidentally gets locked into place. This safety feature has been around for awhile, but new and updated versions work even better and more quickly when there is a problem with your brakes.

As you can see, there are all kinds of ways to stay safe in your car! For best results, take advantage of as many of these safety features as you possibly can.

Hyundai has just released that they are entering deeper into the hybrid/electric scene with their new car called “ionic”. They spell the name Ioniq and promise it will be a new innovative green vehicle. It is gong to be debuting early next year and will be an efficient car that is a fun ride. Head of the R&D center is Woong-Chul Yang, who stated “Our vision for future mobility focuses on choice, with a variety of powertrain options to suit customers' varied lifestyles.”

The Ioniq will be available in three models, completely electric car, and traditional hybrid and plug in. This is one of the first times that three separate models ill be sold in the same type of model.

This choice of having the car have multiple options will help boost sales and will be a step in the right direction for making electric based cars more prevalent in the auto industry. Battery technology has still got a ways to go but there have been some improvements.

Battery Developments

Currently Lithium Ion Batteries are some of the current major batteries used on the market. LIB’s consist of graphite and silicon anodes and a liquid electrolyte. They’ve been one of the major batteries to use for some time now has they can store a lot energy in a tiny space, meaning that the energy density level is very high. They battery is also lightweight, but this can cause a problem as it heats up and expands largely during charging.
This eventually caused leaked lithium to build up on the battery’s outer surface. Once this happens it can short circuit the battery and lead to the eventual death of the battery. Recently researchers at Stanford made some progress by creating a protective nanosphere layer over the lithium that gets rid of the lithium as it expands.

Another area of research is using carbon nanotubes, something that MIT researchers have been working on are developing cathodes that allows electrons to flow out the battery. Working on this new cathode could increase power stored and electricity flowing through the batteries. They expect these current models of batteries to be about five years from being away from being ready for the market. Along with the time it takes to develop a new car model – five years or so, it could even be a decade before this new type of battery becomes prevalent.

Developing and researching for batteries is tricky business as they take a long time to be developed. Consumers are looking for quick easy fixes, but they take a lot of effort to be made. Developing batteries is not only going to be beneficial for EV’s and renewable energy, but a source for new forms of global energy. There is not going to be a one size fits all battery for a long time, but with the varied kinds and research there will be a lot to choose from, improving the Electric Vehicle market in the process.

Why Tesla Opened Up The Model X Price Range

eCZ / December 7, 2015 /Electric Cars

When Tesla premiered the Model X in September, they set a $132,000 price tag that made many eager drivers apprehensive. After all, it was a steep figure even for the luxury electric car manufacturer. Of course, it didn’t take long before it was announced that more affordable models would start at $80,000, putting it just five grand above the Model S, despite its much higher feature range. So why did Tesla premier the higher price point, and what does it get you that a base model won’t?

The Price Gaps

The reason Tesla premiered its highest priced model is simple - they’re generating interest. The six figure price gets people looking. In process, it’s not that different than something like an Apple product launch. They showcase the best, generate an interest in that, offer it as a limited resource, allow for a slightly amped-down version, and let the spillover from the major release trickle down to sales of the lower priced product variant. Think iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

When Tesla opened up the price range, they actually hadn’t done anything different at all. They just let consumers know the price for all possible options, something that was there all along, just not highlighted in the beginning.

What’s The Difference

So now to the meat of the matter - what’s the difference between the $80,000 model and the $132,000 model?
Start with the driving range. The base 70D tops out at 140mph and will travel around 220 miles on a charge. Next up is the 90D, whose 90-kWh battery will get a bit more speed and power, maxing out at 257 miles and 155mph. Finally, the P90D will offer much the same specs as the 90D, but with the added bonus of reaching top speeds in 3.2 seconds. The P90D also comes with performance all-wheel drive, near doubling up on the rear hp rear motor power.

Beyond that, the price of any one person’s Model X really depends on their preferences. Different packages can be added on, each at a cost, to improve the performance of the Model X. The tow package will set drivers back $750 to get their car set up for hauling. The Ludicrous Speed Upgrade, which allows for that 3.2 second 0-60 time, will tack on another $10,000, and a subzero weather package, featuring a heated steering wheel, 3 zone second and third row seat heaters, and wiper blade defrost will add on another $1,000.

Add it all up and the $132,000 model could end up going for $143,750 or more. The difference is really up to the person putting up the cash, and if you’ve got a full mortgage’s worth of money to drop on a car, I’m guessing money isn’t as big an object. That’s why the $80,000 starting price point is such a slick a move on Tesla’s part. It allows drivers to have a sense of the same luxury and exclusivity at just over half of what a fully decked-out high end model would cost.
